How To Make A Rainbow Rice Sensory Bin!

At Dashi Rivers, we love a sensory rice bin! They are a great way to help kids explore their senses, learn colors, and have fun!

Learn how to make a rainbow rice sensory bin of your very own using the steps below!

Materials (for each color):

  • 10-15 drops of food coloring

  • 1 cup uncooked white rice

  • 1 tsp rubbing alcohol

  • Gallon ziplock bags

  • Paper towels for drying

  • Small plastic bin

  • Additional toys (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Place the rice in a ziplock bag. If you are making multiple colors at once, separate 1 cup of rice into each bag.

  2. Add rubbing alcohol to the bags. This helps the color spread around more evenly.

  3. Start adding color! You will likely need to add around 10-15 drops (or more) depending on how bright you want it to be.

  4. Seal the bags (tight!) and mix it around with your hands. If it doesn’t spread well, you can add more rubbing alcohol.

  5. Lay the rice out on paper towel to dry (for about 15 minutes)

  6. Place the rice in the bin and enjoy your rainbow rice sensory bin!

We added pom poms, scoopers, and other toys to play with in the rice.

Make it your own!
